Can you tell if someone is following you on Facebook?
The social media platform is an excellent way to stay connected with friends and family. As a result, Facebook remains one of the most popular social networks worldwide. However, with so many people using the site on a regular basis, there are risks associated with joining up.
It comes as no surprise that users need to take precautions when sharing personal information online. In fact, users should assume that everything they post online could be seen by third parties. Even if you don’t provide your real name or anything else explicitly identifying you, it’s still possible for someone to find and follow you on Facebook.
Regardless of whether you have privacy settings set to private or public, anyone who has your profile URL can see your profile and follow you on Facebook directly from their browser without needing to join first. If you’re concerned about preventing others from finding and following you on Facebook, read on for some helpful tips!
Change Your Username
While this won’t prevent people from finding and following you on Facebook, it can make it more challenging. If you use your real name as your username, it’s simple for anyone to search for and find your profile.
You can make it a little more challenging by changing your username to something unrelated to your real name, but still something easy to remember. If you’re worried that you’ve already linked your profile to your real name and want to change it, you’ll need to delete your profile and start fresh.
Bear in mind that your real name will still appear next to any comments or posts you make that are visible to the public. This means that, even if you use a username unrelated to your real name, people who have your profile URL can still find and follow you on Facebook.
Avoid Linking Your Profile to Your Real Name
If you absolutely must use Facebook and are especially concerned about preventing others from finding and following you on Facebook, one way to do so is by linking your profile to a fake name. You could create a fake Facebook profile and link it to your real account.
The fake profile would link to your real profile, but no one would be able to find or follow you on the site because they wouldn’t know your username.
Using a fake name isn’t ideal, though. If you want to remain connected with friends, family, and colleagues while remaining safe online, it’s better to try to hide your identity than to attempt to create a new one.
Turn On Login Verification
Login verification helps ensure that only you can access your Facebook account, even if someone has your username. By default, login verification is turned off, but you can easily turn it on via Account Settings. You’ll be prompted to enter a mobile phone number associated with the Facebook account you’re trying to protect.
You’ll then receive a text with a code. Enter this code to enable login verification. From then on, you’ll need to enter a six-digit code when logging into your account from a new device.
If someone else has your username but doesn’t have your phone number saved in their contacts, they won’t be able to log in to your account. They won’t be able to turn off login verification either, as this can only be done by the account owner.
Block Everyone (Except Your Friends)
If you’re really worried about someone finding and following you on Facebook, you can block everyone but your friends. This means that, even if they have your username, they won’t be able to find you or follow you on Facebook.
You’ll need to log in to your account and visit Account Settings to block everyone. You can unblock any or all of these contacts at a later date if you change your mind.
Keep in mind that blocking people won’t stop them from seeing anything you’ve posted in the past. Blocking only prevents people from finding and following you on Facebook.
There are a few things you can do to make it more difficult for people to find and follow you on Facebook. Changing your username, avoiding linking your profile to your real name, and turning on login verification are all effective ways to protect your privacy.
If you’re worried about someone finding and following you on Facebook, you can block everyone except your friends. This should help prevent any unwanted attention.
